What is Responsible Gaming?

Responsible gaming is the practice of gambling in a safe, secure and responsible manner. It is important for players to be aware of the risks associated with gambling, and to take steps to ensure that their gambling does not become a source of harm. Responsible gaming includes setting limits on the amount of money and time spent gambling, understanding the odds, and recognizing signs of problem gambling.

It also involves understanding the rules of the game and seeking help if needed. Responsible gaming is an important part of ensuring a safe and enjoyable gambling experience.

What Tools Can I Use to Gamble Responsibly?

Gambling sites typically offer a variety of tools to promote responsible gaming:

  • Setting deposit limits
  • Taking timeouts
  • Self-exclusion

Sites often provide details and information on additional resources, such as facts about gambling, tips for staying in control, and links to gambling-related support services.

Deposit Limits

Deposit limits are a tool offered by many gambling sites to help players stay in control of their gambling by limiting the amount of money they can deposit into their account. Deposit limits allow players to set a maximum amount of money they are allowed to deposit into their account at any given time, and help to ensure that players don't exceed their gambling budget. Deposit limits are an effective way for players to stay in control and enjoy a safe and secure gambling experience.

Timeout

Taking a timeout from a gambling website can be an effective way to take a break from gambling and reset your mindset. It allows you to step away from the temptation of gambling and gives you a chance to re-evaluate your relationship with gambling. Taking a timeout can also be a way to prevent problem gambling from developing into a bigger issue. Timeouts can last anywhere from 24 hours to six weeks, depending on the gambling website, and can be an effective way to take a break and reset your relationship with gambling.

Self-Exclusion

Self-exclusion allows players to take a break from gambling or permanently exclude themselves from the site. When a player opts into self-exclusion, they will be unable to log into or use the gambling website, and any access attempts will be blocked.

Responsible Gaming in the UK

In the UK, there are a number of organisations and charities that provide advice, support and resources for people who are concerned about responsible gaming. These include GamCare, Gamblers Anonymous and the Gambling Commission, who all provide a range of support and resources for people who are struggling with problem gambling.

Additionally, there are a number of helplines available, such as the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) and the Gambling Therapy Helpline (0808 8020 133).

Safer Gambling Week

Safer Gambling Week is an international campaign to raise awareness about safer gambling practices and to provide resources and support to people affected by problem gambling.

It is held annually in November and is organized by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA). During Safer Gambling Week, EGBA and its members promote responsible gambling initiatives, such as providing education and support for problem gamblers and encouraging players to take breaks from gambling.

The campaign also includes activities such as raising awareness among the general public, the gaming industry, and policy makers.

The American Gaming Association

The American Gaming Association (AGA) is a United States gambling industry association. It was founded in 1994 with the goal of promoting, educating and advocating for the gaming industry. The AGA represents the interests of casinos, suppliers and other stakeholders in the industry, and works to ensure that gaming is conducted responsibly and ethically.

The association provides policy and business environment where legal, responsible gaming can thrive. The AGA also produces research and data to educate the public and elected officials about the gaming industry.

FanDuel - Have a Game Plan

In 2021, FanDuel became the first US Sports Operator to sign up to the American Gaming Association’s “Have a Game Plan” with a multimillion-dollar commitment of its media inventory.

“As the mobile gaming industry leader in the U.S., we believe promoting responsible gaming behaviors is a core tenet of growing our business and the industry as a whole,” said Matt King, CEO of FanDuel Group. “We are not only going to commit substantial FanDuel resources to promote Have a Game Plan but we intend to build a consortium of partners throughout the sports and gaming business to scale this initiative and we encourage other operators to join us.”
